Bhakt Pundalik: The Devotee Who Taught Us the True Meaning of Seva
Pandharpur, a serene town in Maharashtra, is revered as the abode of Lord Vitthal (an incarnation of Lord Krishna) and His consort Rukmini Mata. Millions of devotees visit the town each year to seek blessings from this divine couple. But behind this sacred pilgrimage lies the inspiring story of a simple man— Bhakt Pundalik—whose devotion to his family and to God has left an indelible mark on the hearts of devotees.

The Early Life of Bhakt Pundalik
In his early years, Pundalik lived a life focused on indulgence and selfish pursuits. Despite being blessed with loving parents, Janudev and Satyavati, he neglected them and showed little regard for their needs. His carefree, irresponsible lifestyle caused them much sorrow, especially as they grew older and more dependent on his care. But Pundalik, blinded by his own desires, remained indifferent to their suffering.
Seeking a change of scenery more than a spiritual awakening, Pundalik embarked on a pilgrimage to Kashi(Varanasi). During the journey, he encountered a group of holy sages known as the Kukud Siddhas. Curious, Pundalik invited them to his resting place but did so without genuine respect or understanding of their spiritual stature. Despite this, the sages remained kind and accepted his hospitality.
One night, Pundalik witnessed something extraordinary. As the sages meditated, three divine women—representing the sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati—appeared to serve them. To his surprise, the women seemed tired and worn out, with their clothes stained and soiled. Perplexed, Pundalik asked the sages why these divine figures, normally symbols of purity and strength, appeared in such a state.
The sages explained that these women represented seva (selfless service) to humanity, but their exhaustion was a reflection of the neglect and disrespect shown by selfish people like Pundalik, who ignored their sacred duties. The sages revealed that Pundalik’s disregard for his parents was not only hurting his family but also tainting his spiritual progress. They made him realize that true devotion begins at home, with the service and care of one's parents.
This revelation struck Pundalik deeply. He suddenly understood the gravity of his actions and how far he had strayed from the path of dharma (righteousness). Shaken by the wisdom of the sages, Pundalik vowed to change his ways and return home, dedicating himself to the service of his parents. This moment marked the beginning of Pundalik’s transformation from a carefree youth to a true devotee.
The Transformation
The words of the sages struck a deep chord in Pundalik. He returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and immediately began dedicating his life to his parents’ service. What followed was a complete transformation—Pundalik now cared for his parents with devotion, attending to their needs with love and humility. In the eyes of the divine, this newfound selflessness elevated Pundalik to the level of a great devotee.
The Divine Visit: Lord Vitthal and Rukmini Mata
One day, moved by Pundalik’s devotion, Lord Vitthal, along with His consort Rukmini Mata, decided to visit him at his home in Pandharpur. When the divine couple arrived, Pundalik was busy attending to his parents and could not immediately greet them. Though aware of the holy presence outside his door, Pundalik chose not to interrupt his service to his parents.
In a gesture that reflects both humility and unwavering devotion, Pundalik threw a brick (called Veeta in Marathi) outside for Lord Vitthal and Rukmini to stand on, asking them to wait until he finished his duties. Both Lord Vitthal and Rukmini Mata, recognizing the purity of Pundalik’s heart, stood patiently on the brick without any complaint.
This moment of divine patience is forever memorialized in Pandharpur, where the deity Lord Vitthal is often depicted standing on a brick with His hands on His waist, waiting for His devotee. It is believed that this posture is a testament to the Lord’s immense love for those who serve others selflessly, especially their family.
What We Learn from Bhakt Pundalik
Bhakt Pundalik’s story is a timeless lesson in the meaning of true devotion. His transformation from a self-centered individual to a devoted son shows that spirituality is rooted in everyday actions. For Pundalik, serving his parents was the highest form of worship, and through this service, he achieved divine grace.
This story is a cornerstone of the Bhakti tradition—a spiritual path that emphasizes love, devotion, and service. It teaches that true bhakti (devotion) is not just about rituals or prayers, but about how we treat others, especially those who depend on us.
Pandharpur and the Wari Tradition
The town of Pandharpur continues to thrive as a major pilgrimage center, drawing devotees from across India. Every year, during Ashadi / Shayani Ekadashi, thousands of pilgrims known as Warkaris walk hundreds of kilometers in a grand procession, or Wari, to reach the Vitthal-Rukmini Temple. The journey, known for its spiritual energy, mirrors the humility and devotion that Bhakt Pundalik exemplified.
The Warkaris carry the palanquins of saints like Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar, both of whom preached devotion to Lord Vitthal. Just as Pundalik showed that serving one’s family was an act of devotion, the Warkaris demonstrate their love for Vitthal through their selfless pilgrimage, often enduring difficult conditions on foot to reach Pandharpur.
Conclusion: Bhakt Pundalik’s Timeless Legacy
The story of Bhakt Pundalik is not just a tale of devotion to God; it is a reminder that true spirituality is found in how we live our daily lives. Serving others, especially our parents and those in need, is a form of worship that can bring us closer to the divine. Pundalik’s story teaches us that seva is the highest form of devotion, and that love, humility, and responsibility are the keys to spiritual fulfillment.
The image of Lord Vitthal and Rukmini Mata patiently standing on a brick outside Pundalik’s home serves as a powerful reminder of this truth. It shows us that even the Gods honor those who live with devotion, not just in prayers but in actions.
Pandharpur, with its rich spiritual heritage and the legacy of Bhakt Pundalik, continues to inspire millions of devotees. His life story serves as a guiding light, showing that true devotion lies in selfless service and love for all.
